Trainspotting – Sex, Drugs and Ewan McGregor

With the filming of Trainspotting 2 underway, let’s take a look back at the most memorable film of the 90’s.

Mark Renton, the coolest drug addict the world has ever seen. The skinhead, bomber jacket and Scottish accent made us all fall for “Rent-boy”. How is that one character can make Heroin seem so normal, despite the constant robbing, puking and occasional trip down the toilet. This film was a kind of in-sight for the common Joe, into the crazy world of Heroin addiction and it’s affects.

“Personality, I mean that’s what counts, right? That’s what keeps a relationship going through the years. Like heroin, I mean heroin’s got a great fucking personality”. – Sick Boy

Goin’ cold turkey, the harsh reality of Heroin. Ups and downs, Trainspotting flits between good and bad moments, as if you’d just shot up and were on a come down. You feel it for Rent-Boy, when he attempts to go clean it’s painful to watch. That little scene where he climbs down “The worst Toilet in Scotland”, you sit their gagging at the thought but not Rent-boy he knows that without that little pill he’s fucked. That’s the reality of it, anyone attempting to come off drugs, it’s going to be painful and 9 times out of 10 if you ain’t got the right people around you, you’ll just slip back into the needle.

“Relinquishing junk. Stage one, preparation. For this you will need one room which you will not leave. Soothing music. Tomato soup, ten tins of. Mushroom soup, eight tins of, for consumption cold. Ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of. Magnesia, milk of, one bottle. Paracetamol, mouthwash, vitamins. Mineral water, Lucozade, pornography. One mattress. One bucket for urine, one for faeces and one for vomitus. One television and one bottle of Valium. Which I’ve already procured from my mother. Who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way also a drug addict. And now I’m ready. All I need is one final hit to soothe the pain while the Valium takes effect”. –  Mark Renton

Diane, our fierce and feisty lady. Playing the love interest of a Heroin addict isn’t so easy, Rent-boy finds it hard to connect with anyone without shooting up but Diane despite being of a rather young age seems to have a way with him. It was rather a shame that Diane didn’t appear very frequently in the film, we reckon she could have had quite a positive affect on Rent-boy, with her stubborn attitude and funky style she has a lot of potential to grow as a character in Trainspotting 2 (HINT, HINT).

“Do you find that this approach usually works, or, let me guess, you’ve never tried it before. In fact, you don’t normally approach girls, am I right? The truth is that you’re a quiet, sensitive type, but if I’m prepared to take a chance I might just get to know the inner you: witty, adventurous, passionate, loving, loyal, a little bit crazy, a little bit bad, but, hey, don’t us girls just love that?” – Diane

Trainspotting 2, is it the end of an era or just the beginning?

We recently found out that Trainspotting 2 is underway and what we know so far is that ALL of the original cast are returning back to Scotland. It is rumoured that this film will be based on Pornography and Heroin in the mist of this. Not a drastic change to the original themes, but is it possible to ever continue on from such an amazing film. That’s for you to decide, all we can do is wait.

and so i’ll leave you with a quote WARNING *must be read in heavy Scottish accent*…

“Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose D.I.Y and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?” – Mark Renton
